Today—May 5 2011—marks the 66th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands from the occupying German forces during the Second World War. The nation was largely liberated by Canadian troops, with the assistance of the British and Americans as they tried to spear head into German (see the failure of Operation Market-Garden) in September and the Free French airborne (see Operation Amherst) in April. On May 5, 1945, the Allies and remaining German command in the country reached an agreement on the surrender of German forces in the Netherlands. One day later, on May 6 1945, the surrender agreement was signed in Wageningen University, three days before the surrender of all German forces.
